Jane Austen Dancers of Bath
...an escape from the cares of today
About Us
The 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice and the Ball at Netherfield where Mr Darcy danced with Miss Elizabeth Bennet, inspired the Jane Austen Dancers of Bath to be founded in 1996 – the first and foremost Regency dance group in Bath and the UK.
The Jane Austen Dancers of Bath hold regular classes in this beautiful Georgian city where Jane Austen made her home between 1801 and 1806 and also set Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, two of her published novels.
In our classes we provide the opportunity to learn how to dance, and find out more about the etiquette, the fashion, the history and the social customs of the Regency and late Georgian period - all of which has been extensively researched by Elspeth Reed and Liz Bartlett from original sources.
We hold an annual Ball and special classes for events such as The Jane Austen Festival and we frequently participate in film and TV projects and private & public functions/parties/balls/hen parties.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to join us in our classes or at one of our events soon.
Dance Classes
Dance classes are for all levels of ability and age is no restriction, but Regency dancing is a lively form of dance. You do not need a costume or a partner to participate, however it is advisable to wear low/flat comfortable shoes or preferably dance shoes. As we operate an 'All Welcome' to advertised classes, you do not need to book a place.
Classes are held on Wednesdays in the Scouts Bath District HQ hall, 7 Grove Street, Bathwick, Bath.
Please see the calendar for class dates, times and location.
Classes cost £5 per session and usually run from 8pm to 10pm.
Our Portfolio
The Jane Austen Dancers are available to assist you with your special function, tailored to your own requirements - whether a costumed performance, public join-in dancing, both or more!
The Jane Austen Dancers specialise in recreating the elegant atmosphere and style associated with the period novels of Jane Austen, but also enjoy organising more informal events.
Themed balls, hen parties, wedding receptions, parties and celebrations, talks and readings, workshops, exhibitions, photo-shoots and TV/film work.
Our repertoire not only encompasses the dances which would have been danced during Jane Austen's lifetime, but also the ever-popular dances which have been used for past TV/film productions of her books.
Our callers, and musicians we source if required, are very experienced and are on hand to give advice before and during your event.
Our dancers who perform publicly have authentic Empire-line costumes drawn from original sources.
